2010-2012

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Performance

Elmiet is a durational performance piece where Johnson moved through the streets of Halifax, Nova Scotia wearing a weaved headpiece. The work references local treaties between the Mi'kmaq and European Settlers, and the repeal of a 1756 Scalping Proclamation on Mi'kmaq Scalps in Nova Scotia. The performance has played an important role in generating dialogue within the broader public in Nova Scotia and North America, bringing awareness to the violent racism ingrained in government legislation.
